Also discussed is Zsigmond's technique of flashing the film, which he did on Blow Out to create less contrast and more shadow detail. This is a technique Zsigmond had developed on previous film projects in order to compensate for the slower film stocks of the day. "I flashed certain things to get more speed out of the film, more shadow detail," Zsigmond tells Silberg. "If we had a big scene-- like the fireworks at the end of Blow Out, where we had to show a whole city block at the port-- I would flash the film at least 10 percent to get a good exposure and detail in the shadows." The article goes on to explain that this was a risky process, involving the threading of exposed and unprocessed negative onto a printer. If there was any mistake made, or some kind of problem with the negative, a large amount of work could be lost for good. Fortunately (and incredibly), this never seemed to happen.

Also discussed is De Palma's penchant for single-take scenes:
"We would sometimes do shots that lasted four or five minutes," the cinematographer recalls. "Brian is very good at that-- he knows exactly what he wants. It's very easy for me to light those kinds of shots on his movies, because I know exactly where he wants the camera to go. And I know he's going to use it all because he loves using those shots-- abd there's no way to cut away. Sometimes he'd go five, six, eight or even 10 takes, knowing that the scene would play out as one shot on the screen."
Zsigmond finds this approach rewarding: "The fewer cuts you have in a film, the more interesting it is to watch the scene. It's like watching real life-- you get up close to people and to the action and let the scene play out. Lately I've enjoyed working with Woody Allen, because he is really aiming for one shot with no coverage. No close-ups, no over-the-shoulders. He wants to move the camera, and he does it in one continuous shot."
For [cinematographer Jan Kiesser, who was Zsigmond's operator on Blow Out], shots like this meant a significant amount of responsibility. "When we were making Blow Out," he says, "we didn't have video playback. It was really on your shoulders as an operator to critically judge composition throughout the shot. You had the best seat in the house for all the critical decisions, like eyelines and framing, but nobody else was going to see the shot until dailies! We were also shooting wide open, so we needed to be very critical about focus."
Michael Gershman was the first AC on Blow Out and worked frequently with Kiesser. "Michael and I started our careers together in animation," says Kiesser, "and we were on many crews togather. Like all great focus pullers, Michael had an uncanny knack for focus-- it was like a sixth sense. On Blow Out, he really had to multi-task, because some of those shots required zooming, focus-pulling and stop changes all at once."ZSIGMOND: "I NEVER LIKED THE LOOK OF SOME OF THOSE SHOTS AS MUCH AS I DID IN THE BLU-RAY"
The article also discusses the 360-degree shot in Jack's sound studio. "The space wasn't big enough to lay down tracks," Kiesser tells Silberg. "We had the camera in the middle of the room, and we kept panning around and zooming to keep up with the action. In those days, the camera didn't have a battery; it was powered from an external source, so we had to twist the power cable around the tripod and then untwist it during the shot."
Also discussed is the use of the Little Big Crane, which was designed by key grip Richard "Dicky" Deats. "The Little Big Crane let us get into places we might not have been able to access with a larer crane," Kiesser tells Silberg. "We had also used it a lot with Vilmos on Heaven's Gate. This was before remote heads, so I would ride the crane and time the camera movement to the crane's position. My strongest memory of [shooting Blow Out] is sitting up there in the cold and wind."
For the fireworks scenes at the end, according to the article, the production used real fireworks for the wider shots. Zsigmond, who notes that the fireworks were more blown out (or overexposed) than he would have liked, recalls to Silberg, "I brought in as many big lights as I could to bring up the darker areas. I never liked the look of some of those shots as much as I did in the Blu-ray that came out recently. I wasn't involved in timing it, but Brian must have been, or somebody who understood what we were going for, because the colors are more intense than we could get them [photochemically]. Today, we would finish with a DI, and we would have more control." The Criterion transfer of Blow Out was, in fact, supervised by De Palma.
Silberg's article also briefly covers the heartbreaking shot of Jack cradling Sally's body as the camera seems to spin around them:
At the end of the chase, Jack cradles Sally in his arms as the camera spins 360 degrees and reveals the fireworks above them. The shot was one of the film's few optical effects. "The production couldn't possibly create real fireworks in the sky as we spun the camera," Zsigmond explains. "We put the actors and their lighting on a turntable in front of a bluescreen, and we positioned the camera on one side of the turntable facing the bluescreen, where it remained static as we turned the actors around 360 degrees. Because the lighting was moving with the actors, it looked as if the camera was circling them. The fireworks were added in post."
"IT ISN'T IMPORTANT THAT WHAT WE'RE WATCHING IS 'REAL'"
The article concludes with Zsigmond expressing, in Silberg's words, "a particular fondness for the unabashedly stylish films he shot with De Palma" (the other films are Obsession, The Bonfire Of The Vanities, and The Black Dahlia). "I've worked on so many films where we aimed to be 'real,' and we would never have done some of the shots I did with Brian," Zsigmond tells Silberg. "But in a movie by Brian De Palma-- or Hitchcock-- it isn't important that what we're watching is 'real.' We're telling a story, and the most important thing is that the audience has fun watching it."

A potentially very interesting role that got away from Michelle was "Mistress of the Seas", to be directed by Paul Verhoeven and produced by Jon Peters. It was to have centered around the true story of two female pirates, "Anne Bonny" and "Mary Read", who sailed the seas with "Calico Jack" in the Caribbean during the 18th Century. "Venho de uma outra escola. Após ter sido assistente de Rogério Sganzerla em SEM ESSA ARANHA e trabalhado em alguns filmes de Julinho Bressane, aprendi a fazer cinema em Super 8, que é uma espécie de "aprenda sem mestre". Por essas coincidências, por esses acasos, venho do cinema mudo. (...)

De maneira que sou o único cineasta oriundo do cinema mudo, com uma idéia na cabeça e uma câmera na mão, vindo de uma experiência extremamente lúdica e doméstica, que foi a série Quotidianas Kodaks, quando fizemos NOSFERATU NO BRASIL, A SENTENÇA DE DEUS, A MÚMIA VOLTA A ATACAR e CHUVA DE BROTOS, criando o grupo Ivamps, onde a estrela era a minha mulher, Helena Lustosa; os galãs, Ricardo Horta e Zé Português, meus melhores amigos; a Cristiny Nazareth, que sempre foi uma paixão da minha vida, e a Ciça Afonso Penna, que é meio minha prima. A Scarlet Moon, Daniel Más e Torquato Neto foram atores convidados. (...)

Como vocês podem perceber, sempre andei com vampiros, múmias e mulheres bonitas, desde o início... Quando percebi que não podia ficar fazendo Super 8 a vida inteira, porque só circulava entre amigos, parti para o chamado cinema profissional.

De início, tive muita dificuldade em me adaptar ao cinema falado: preferi fazer MOREIRA DA SILVA numa forma musical, sem depoimentos; nos documentários que fiz no Pará, MUSEU GOELDI e RUÍNAS DO MURUCUTU, o som era em off.

No primeiro filme onde usei fala, O UNIVERSO DE JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS, Zé do Caixão dá um verdadeiro show em som direto, numa série de entrevistas. Este filme marca também o início do meu trabalho como com o montador Gilberto Santeiro. Nesta série de curtas metragens, procurei fazer um painel de alguns artistas inventores, para que sua obra ficasse imortalizada.

Quanto voltei dos EUA, e 77, trouxe negativo preto-e-branco e uma câmera Beaulieu, a fim de recuperar a linguagem do Super 8 em 16 mm, e depois ampliar para 35 mm. (...)

E assim nascia O SEGREDO DA MÚMIA, que originalmente se chamava O LAGO MALDITO, sem uma história definida, apenas algumas idéias minhas e do Eduardo Viveiros. Com o legendário Wilson Grey no papel principal, assistido pelo maestro Júlio Medaglia e pelo fiel Igor, interpretado por Felipe Falcão, que até hoje foi a maior revelação masculina dos meus filmes, partimos para as filmagens, tendo como cenário o instituto Oswaldo Cruz, em Manguinhos.

Nos intervalos das filmagens, ainda tive tempo e fôlego para realizar mais dois documentários: Dr. DIONÉLYU e CINE-TEATRO NÔ, sobre Hélio Oiticica.

Com toda essa confusão, tivemos que dar um tempo na Múmia, porque estávamos aguardando um pedido de financiamento junto a Embrafilme.

Como filmávamos sem roteiro, as filmagens poderiam nunca ter fim... naquela época, é bom lembrar, existia uma "outra lei que ia dar certo" - a controvertida lei de obrigatoriedade de exibição de curtas nacionais, que é, na prática, o maior blefe, e acabou afastando nosso maior capital, que é o público....

Resolvi aumentar o meu late, transformando O LAGO MALDITO numa espécie de "fragmentos de um seriado incompleto". Como era um filme de múmia e em preto-e-branco, tinha todas as características de um autêntico classe B. A forma de seriado incompleto, também, resolveria o problema de não termos um roteiro definido... além de ser uma maneira diferente de entrar no circuito....

Para definir os episódios e escrever os diálogos, resolvi procurar um especialista, e, assim, fui bater à porta de Rubens Francisco Luchetti, o roteirista que Mojica havia me apresentado. (...) Após visionar nosso material, ele começou a criar os capítulos, mas, como todo criador de imaginação prodigiosa, nos enganou, escrevendo um outro filme.

Aí, felizmente, obtivemos um sim da Embrafilme, e produtor Zelito Vianna resolveu entrar no negócio (...) O resultado não podia ser outro: após cinco anos de exaustivos trabalhos, O segredo da múmia estava pronto, e acabou por surpreender a todos, conseguindo quebrar o gelo a que estava condenado o cinema experimental. Recuperando a velha tradição das chanchadas e de O bandido da luz vermelha, criamos um filme de vanguarda popular, que foi assistido por mais de 300.000 espectadores, conquistando vinte prêmios em festivais, sendo um deles internacional: o Festival de Cinema Fantástico de Madri.

O SEGREDO DA MÚMIA foi um grande sucesso no exterior. Aqui, conseguiu a proeza de ser um dos poucos filmes produzidos pela Embrafilme que se pagou, além de ter criado um novo gênero - o Terrir - que inaugurou besteirol antes do teatro. Uma múmia no Brasil.

(...) AS SETE VAMPIRAS foi um grande desafio, reunindo maior elenco já visto numa produção nacional, uma chanchada hitchcockiana para adoradores de cinema, uma colcha de retalhos classe B, repleta de "defeitos especiais" e sintonizada com os novos campeões de bilheteria americanos da espantomania.

Sempre duvidei da possibilidade de fazermos a terrível planta carnívora que devora o botânico no início do thriller, outra armadilha que o Luchetti me preparou. Sua realização deve-se unicamente à genialidade de Oscar Ramos, a quem carinhosamente chamamos de Super Ramos, ou Superamos, que cuida de todo nosso visual e sempre me tranquilizou.

AS SETE VAMPIRAS foi meu maior sucesso, uma verdadeira coqueluche nacional, tendo alcançado um público superior a 1.500.000 espectadores: conquistou nove prêmios, entre os quais o de melhor filme no Rio Cine Festival, o prêmio Kodak de fotografia, abalou Fantasporto, em Portugal - onde também fomos premiados - e participou de mais de dez festivais internacionais, sendo o filme brasileiro de maior sucesso de vendas no festival de Cannes, em 1987.

Daqui para frente, é bobagem ficar falando das peripécias d'O ESCORPIÃO ESCARLATE, meu novo filme, onde procuramos homenagear os anos dourados da Rádio Nacional, através de uma das mais criativas rádio-novelas e, sem dúvida nenhuma, a mais eletrizante: As aventuras do anjo, que, na verdade, não era uma novela tradicional, era um seriado de 10 minutos de duração diários, escrito e dirigido e protagonizado pelo genial a Alvaro Aguiar, que encarnava O Anjo, o famoso playboy detetive, desta vez em luta contra o temível Escorpião Escarlate, cuja história também será o assunto do nosso próximo livro."

Brian de Palma The Hunter - possivelmente

After all that talk about how Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan is similar to the cinema of Brian De Palma, it turns out that De Palma's name was actually included in the Black Swan press kit. Under the kit's bio for screenwriter John McLaughlin, one of McLaughlin's latest film projects is listed as "a movie based on the Donald Westlake underworld character Parker with Brian De Palma attached to direct." I checked with De Palma, who confirmed the project. The bio also mentions a McLaughlin project called The Man Who Killed Houdini, and someone at TampaBay.com yesterday must have misread McLaughlin's bio, because they mistakenly stated that De Palma was attached to the Houdini project (De Palma said he is not involved).

In any case, the Parker project sounds rather promising. Parker is a character created by Westlake under the pseudonym Richard Stark. The first novel to feature the character, The Hunter, was published in 1962, and subsequently adapted into two films: John Boorman's masterful Point Blank (1967), which starred Lee Marvin (as Parker) and Angie Dickinson; and Payback (1999), starring Mel Gibson (as Parker) and Gary Sinise. Robert Duvall also played a character based on Parker in John Flynn's The Outfit (1973), as did Jim Brown in Gordon Flemyng's The Split (1968).

McLaughlin has also adapted Stephen Rebello's book, Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho, into a screenplay that is going into production this year under the direction of Ryan Murphy, and starring Anthony Hopkins as Hitchock.

Does he worry that 'Killer Joe' might be viewed as being transgressive in the way some of his past works have been? "Who cares?" he replied. "I never think about that. I didn't think about it then. I never set out to push anybody's buttons. I only made the films for the most part -- except for the first couple and maybe one or so later in my career -- that I wanted to see. Occasionally what happened is that the public wanted to see them, too. They were in the zeitgeist. I never set out knowing I could do that or that I would fail in doing that."
